10.4. there’s no place like home…

Today is World Habitat Day, a day to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic right of all to adequate shelter.

This years theme Better City, Better Life was chosen to highlight the United Nations’ vision of a sustainable urban world that harnesses the potential and possibilities, mitigates inequalities and disparities, and provides a home for people of all cultures and ages.

Here are some ways you can get involved:

  • Organize a competition to find solutions to human settlements and urban problems, or an essay or art competition to help create awareness.
  • Organize fund raising, recreational or entertainment activities like sports event or concerts, using the proceeds to extend services for poor communities.
  • Hit up the Carter Work Project. Starting yesterday and going through October 8, volunteers with the Carter Project will join in building and rehabilitating houses with Habitat for Humanity.
  • Advocate for decent housing for all. Send a message to your members of Congress and urge them to support affordable housing initiatives.
  • Give today to help Habitat eliminate poverty housing.
