
Ladies, get ready to show those ta-tas, today is National Mammography Day.
Sponsored by the National Breast Cancer Awareness organization, women are encouraged to use today as a reminder to make an appointment to get a mammogram. Need more encouragement? Many radiologists provide free or discounted screening mammograms today (and throughout the month of October).
Mammography, an x-ray examination of the breasts, is considered by experts as the gold standard in breast cancer detection. Mammography can help detect breast cancer years before a lump can be felt by physical touch, and the earlier breast cancer is detected, the greater the chances it an be successfully treated.
The American Cancer Society (as well as several other cancer organizations) recommend that all women 40 years of age and older receive yearly screening mammograms. In addition to yearly mammograms, all women should practice monthly breast self-exams.
